Sophomore ace left-hander Chase Morgan pitched for the first time in three weeks with four shutout innings and the bats made the most of 10 hits in a 7-1 road win over South Alabama on Friday at Eddie Stanky Field.
The Cajuns improved to 10-13 overall and 2-2 in Sun Belt play, while the Jaguars fell to 10-11 and 0-4. Game two of the series is 2 p.m.
Saturday. Morgan was somehow credited with the win after allowing three hits, three walks and striking out four with 65 pitches over four innings. Andrew Herrmann followed and was equally effective, giving up one run on five hits, one walk and striking out three in five innings and 74 pitchs to get his first save of the season.
The Cajuns scratched a single tally in the first when Caleb Stelly singled and scored on Owen Galt’s bunt single. It was the beginning of a big night for Galt, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs. UL added two runs in the fifth on a two-run double from Galt after Mark Collins singled and stole second ahead of walks to Conor Higgs and Stelly.
Jose Torres made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the eighth after Galt reached on a bunt single. In the ninth, the Cajuns really blew the game open with Galt bases-loaded hit by pitch, a Torres RBI ground out and Sam Ardoin’s run-scoring single. Stelly joined Galt as UL’s only two multi-hit batters in the game at 2-for-4.
