The House District 19 race between Democrat Jillaire McMillan and Republican Dan Woog will undergo a mandatory recount, the Colorado Secretary of State’s office has announced. Because the vote differential in the race is within 0.5% of the winner’s total, a recount is required in accordance with state law.

Woog received 28,419 votes (50.1%) and McMillan 28,310 votes (49.9%), which amounts to a 109-vote difference.

HD 19 includes all of Erie, Dacono, Frederick and Firestone as well as portions of east Longmont and unincorporated areas in Weld and Boulder counties. Incumbent Democrat Rep. Jennifer Parenti announced in July that she was dropping out of the race even after the June legislative primaries.

A committee later selected McMillan to fill the nomination vacancy left by Parenti. McMillan, who previously conceded the HD 19 race to Woog, said by phone Friday that she did not expect the recount to change the outcome of the election given Woog’s more than 100-vote lead. “We’re happy to see that the secretary of state and the county clerks are going through with the legal process,” McMillan said.

McMillan campaigned on issues such as promoting access to reproductive care, funding public education, supporting affordable housing and public transportation and advocating for gun violence prevention, according to her website . Due to a poor phone connection, Woog could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. Woog previously served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2020-2022 and as a two term trustee for Erie from 2013-2020, according to his campaign website .

When he announced his campaign for HD 19, Woog said he was most concerned about reducing the cost of living, revitalizing public education and improving public safety. The mandatory recount must be completed by Dec. 6.
