Race for Baton Rouge mayor is neck and neck, early results show

The race for East Baton Rouge Parish mayor-president appears to be neck-and-neck between three candidates who all are within a few hundred votes of each other, according to early election returns.

With 269 out of 331 precincts and early voting reporting: Sharon Weston Broome had 53,031 votes, or 31% Sid Edwards had 58,199 voters, or 34% Ted James had 47,934 votes, or 28% Broome, the incumbent, has sparred fiercely with James, a former state representative and fellow Democrat. Edwards has rallied the Republican vote in a parish that has steadily turned more blue over the past decade.
