Rugby League: RABAUL Rugby League successfully staged the Peace Cup 9s Tournament at the Queen Elizabeth Park over the weekend. The tournament held on Friday April 11-12 attracted men’s and women’s teams from the Rabaul, Kokopo and Gazelle districts. The tournament was sponsored by local SME operator, Laurie Warium through Gugu Hire Cars with a sponsorship package of K4000.

The Rabaul Saints defeated Rabaul Panthers 4-l in the women’s division while in the men’s Grand Final, Matupit Eagles went down to Rabaul Saints 14-8 as well. Both winners collected K2000 (men) and K1000 [women] in prizemoney. The runners up collected cash prices of K500 and K1000 respectively for both the men and women.

This is not the first sponsorship from Gugu Hire Car as the company is a regular sponsor of sports in the Rabaul District and the province. Gugu Hire Car and its subsidiary Gugu Building & Construction continue to commit and participate in community obligations in supporting the Churches, Women, Law & Order and Youths Empowerment programs and employment in building projects. The tournament ended on a high note.

Warium when thanking the teams for participating and promoting the spirit of unity, gave his assurance that his SME entities would continue to support sports, women, churches and youths. He challenged the players to be role models in their communities, be agents of change, play hard to be selected to represent the Gurias, SP PNG Hunters and aim for the PNG NRL team in 2028. Gugu Hire Cars has sponsored softball tournaments and other codes including volleyball and rugby touch for youths at Gelagela Resettlement.

“Sports is one factor that can create peace and harmony among youths. “I am trying my best to drive this at Gelagela Resettlement to Rabaul,” Warium added. He stressed that in a small way, it will tackle law and order issues but can make a big difference if youths are involved in sport.
