'Quintessential' market town in Dorset named among the best in England

Wareham in Dorset has been named among the most quintessential market towns in England by Independent Cottages.

"But it’s the picturesque English countryside – home to rolling green hills, traditional pubs, and exceptional walking routes – that often tops the list.

"And, at the very heart of the country’s rural beauty, is its market towns. "These ‘quintessentially English’ settlements embody community spirit, rich heritage, and age-long traditions. "Whether people explore the English countryside during a weekend getaway or a short day out, these market towns have something special to offer.



" Wareham was one of a couple of Dorset representatives on the list, ranking in 29th place, which can be found on . In terms of how it stacked up against other market towns, Wareham is said to have dated back to the 16th Century. With 199 listed buildings, 66 independent businesses and four museums there is plenty to explore.

Additionally, the Wareham Quay Market has earned a 4.7/5 score on Google Reviews from 40 ratings. Held every Saturday from 8am it has stalls selling items such as flowers, vegetables, fresh fish, BBQ meats, cheeses and preserves.

On the , Wareham's history is highlighted with it being one of the few remaining Saxon walled towns in England. It adds: "Wareham is a pretty riverside town where the rivers Frome and Piddle meet.
