TOWNS in the border provinces of West Sepik and Western celebrated a peaceful independence anniversary without any major incidents reported. West Sepik provincial police commander Chief Inspector Billy Patrick said respective districts, especially in Vanimo, Telefomin and Nuku, took lead in organising celebration activities to commemorate this day. Due to funding limitation, most parta of the province celebrated on Monday only.

Few policemen from Vanimo were deployed to Nuku to boost police presence there during this Independence celebration while the situation there at Nuku was also observed quietly and peacefully, according to a police report received. Celebrations in Vanimo were held at Vanimo Town Oval and Dapu Primary School 3km drive east of the town. Police presence was shown at these two locations in Vanimo while nearby secondary schools and primary schools had flag raising ceremonies and also a joint security forces parade was showcased by police, PNGDF and the Correctional Service.



North Fly provincial police commander Inspector Anjap Minata said no major incidents, celebration was done peacefully and meaningfully throughout the command. Singsing groups and various performances were held with flag raising and police parade..
