MOST of us are media consumers - be it the television, radio or the Internet. These content are part of broadcasting - part of what the media industry is about. But was broadcasting a term that originated and first used in the media industry? Verdict: FALSE Way before the dawn of radio, the term was first used in the agricultural industry.
The term means "dispersed upon the ground by hand" and this is in reference to seeds. And this term was recorded around 1785, and later used as an adverb from 1832. If you look at the words "broad" and "cast" separately, they each mean "wide or over a large area" and "to throw or to scatter" respectively - hence, to broadcast figuratively means to "widely scatter".
Later, with the invention of the radio, the term broadcasting was linked to media as early as the 1920s. The idea that radio waves that carried audio signals from the radio stations to a wide audience at homes and offices were similar to those seeds being scattered on the field. With how technology has evolved the media industry, the term has been adopted to the media industry to describe the distribution of information and entertainment via electronic signals.
