Quick hitter: Short-handed Greyhounds surrender four in the third, lose 6-3 to the Erie Otters

Article content Matthew Schaefer scored two goals, including the game winner, as the Erie Otters beat the Soo Greyhounds 6-3 at the Erie Insurance Arena on Friday night. Schaefer’s winner came at 7:47 of the third period as his shot from the left-side boards defected off a Hounds defender and behind Charlie Schenkel for his sixth goal of the campaign. Schenkel stopped 39 of 43 shots in the loss.

Justin Cloutier cut the lead to 4-3 with a power-play goal at 11:53 as his shot from the slot beat Charlie Burns high to the blocker side for his 11 th of the season. The goal went to review as Caeden Carlisle appeared to cross the blue line prior to the puck crossing the line, but the goal was allowed to stand. Cloutier scored twice for the visitors.



Carey Tarrance and Gabriel Frasca scored empty-net goals to secure the win for the mose side. Sam Bowness also scored for the Greyhounds. The Soo road record dips to 5-7-0-0.

The Hounds are 4-6-0-0 in their last 10 games. Bowness’s goal was his first of the season and first OHL goal in his 11 th game. Callum Hughes and Pano Fimis also scored for the Otters.

Erie improved to 6-1-1-1 at home. Their last regulation loss in Erie was Sept. 28 against the Brampton Steelheads.

Burns turned aside 23 shots for the win. The Sault resident is 2-3-0-0 in seven appearances with the Otters. The Hounds went 1-5 on the powerplay.

The Otters went 1-2 with the man advantage. The Hounds finish up their three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon in Brampton. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.

m. against the Steelheads. The Hounds opened the scoring at 1:41 of the first period when Bowness notched his first goal of the season.

The Otters won the draw, but defender Ty Henry turned the puck over to the right of net. Bowness quickly grabbed the loose puck and beat Burns low to the blocker side. The Otters tied the game at 2:28 of the second period with a power-play marker as Schaefer skated over the blue line and whipped a shot passed Schenkel for his fifth goal of the season.

The goal came on Erie’s 21st shot on net. The Hounds regained the advantage at 5:19 as Cloutier redirected a Brady Martin pass into the back of the net for his 10 th of the season. Martin skated into the slot with the puck and noticed Cloutier stationed alone by the post to the left of Burns.

The second-year centre was flattened by Malcolm Spence just after the puck left his stick. Erie tied the game with a short-handed goal at 9:24 as Fimis got behind the Soo defence and beat Schenkel with a deke to the glove side for his 10 th of the season. Erie leads the OHL in short-handed goals with seven.

Spence has three short-handed goals to his credit. The Otters outshot the visitors 15-6 in the middle stanza and 32-19 after 40 minutes. Hughes gave the Otters a 4-2 lead at 1:56 of the third period, converting from the low slot on a behind the net wrap around pass from Alexis Daviault.

The goal wasn’t without controversy as Otters forward Brett Hammond went into the crease and appeared to knock Schenkel back into the net, leaving a wide-open look for Hughes. The Hounds challenged the marker for goalie interference, but the call on the ice was allowed to stand. The replay appeared to show Brodie McConnell-Barker bump Hammond into the Hounds keeper.

Noel Nordh, Christopher Brown, Owen Allard, Andrew Gibson and Keegan Gillan were scratched. Nordh, Brown and Gibson were injured in Thursday night’s loss to the IceDogs. Heading into league action on Friday night Charlie Schenkel led the OHL in save percentage at .

924, stopping 438 of 474 shots in 879 minutes of action. The Otters signed Callum Hughes to a standard players agreement on Friday. Prior to his signing, the 18-year-old played for the West Kelowna Warriors of the British Columbia Hockey League.
