PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Quentin Grimes at the trade deadline hoping to have him play next to Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey to get the Sixers into the play-in and, eventually, the playoffs.Unfortunately, that did not happen. Grimes only played five games with Embiid before the big fella was ruled medically unable to play.

He played 10 games with George before he was ruled out. He has played with nine with Maxey. Therefore, the ball has been in Grimes' hands and the Sixers have been relying on him to be their primary scorer down the stretch of what has been a tough season.

He has responded averaging 21.8 points and shooting 39.2% from deep while being the No.

1 option every night, but he won't be the No. 1 option when the Big 3 return in 2025-26.One has to wonder how Grimes will fit next to the star trio if he does return next season.

He will be a restricted free agent in 2025."Just playing my game," Grimes said. "Whatever opportunity presents itself to be making plays on the ball if the coach needs that.

Shooting, defense, whatever. I feel like I’ve shown that my whole career that I can play just on the ball, scoring, play off the ball. I showed that in New York and Dallas and showing a little bit of both.

I can do whatever I need to help the team win, honestly."Grimes' main role for the Sixers if he returns will be to provide shooting and floor spacing next to Embiid, George, and Maxey. Per NBA Stats, he's shooting 40.

7% on catch-and-shot 3s. He is a fantastic option for this group next to those three so one has to believe coach Nick Nurse and his staff will give him a legitimate shot to earn a starting spot should he return in free agency."Listen, he can score the ball and he can shoot the 3, right?" Nurse added of his fit in the future.

"I like his defensive pressure. He can move his feet side to side, get through screens, can chase people off screens. We’ve asked him to start rebounding more.

We need our guards to be rebounders. He’s done a better job with that. So I’d say I’d want him to do all those things.

"It remains to be seen if Grimes will even return in free agency, but it's obvious that he understands what is expected of him. This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: Quentin Grimes explains how he'll fit next to injured Sixers stars.
