A Sussex hamlet offers a picture-perfect winter walk. Camera Club snapper Joanna Kaczorowska took a trip to Halnaker, a small South Downs village near Chichester. The hamlet is known for its “magical” tunnel of trees that looks as though it has been taken straight out of a Tolkien novel, located on the Halnaker Windmill Trail.
Joanna captured the wildlife on her stroll, including an endearing donkey relaxing in its paddock. She also spotted a sprinkling of crisp white snowdrops in their full winter bloom. The hill is the location of a Neolithic earthwork structure known as a 'causewayed enclosure'. The mill was built in 1740 as a tower-mill with hand wheel winding by pulling on an endless chain hanging down at ground level. Boxgrove Parish Council reported that the last milling family was that of Watkins who lived in the mill house close by from 1868 until 1905 when lightning split the main shaft, rendering it “unusable”.
It has since been restored..
