Qatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the College of Health Sciences, Qatar University (QU), celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of academic excellence, research innovation, and impactful contributions to the healthcare sector. The department has played a crucial role in shaping the future of biomedical sciences in Qatar, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030’s emphasis on science, research, and innovation. Since its inception in 1984, the department has graduated over 1,000 students, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions in healthcare, research, and academia.

With a steadfast commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering scientific discovery, the department continues to strengthen the quality and efficiency of healthcare services in the country. Reflecting on the department’s journey, Dr. Hanan Abdul Rahim, dean of the College of Health Sciences, emphasized its lasting impact, stating, “As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, we reflect on four decades of excellence in education, research, and innovation.



Since its establishment in 1984, the department has been a cornerstone in advancing knowledge in healthcare and empowering the next generation of scientists. “This achievement is a testament to the tremendous efforts invested in establishing and developing this program over the years, as well as the dedication of faculty members, students, and graduates who have contributed to groundbreaking discoveries and impactful community service. Together, we will continue to shape the future of biomedical sciences in Qatar.

” During the ceremony, Dr. Khalid Al-Ali, advisor to the Minister of Education, reflected on the early days of the department. He recalled its inception as a small program under the College of Sciences and praised the contributions of staff members who helped establish a strong foundation for the program.

Dr. Al-Ali highlighted the department’s progression into an independent unit within the College of Health Sciences and the introduction of master’s programs that added a distinctive academic and research dimension. He also reviewed the department’s achievements, including obtaining prestigious international accreditations, producing generations of skilled graduates who have enriched the healthcare sector, and the recent milestone of enrolling male students in the program.

In her address, Dr. Maha Al Asmakh, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, welcomed attendees and highlighted key recent achievements, including the approval of the Master’s Program in Bioinformatics, a step forward in supporting Qatar’s growing biomedical and biotechnology sectors. She also took the opportunity to honour distinguished individuals and medical institutions that have played a vital role in the department’s progress.
