In 2024, athenahealth introduced Ambient Notes, aimed at generating clinical documentation by integrating ambient listening and generative AI directly into the athenaOne clinical workflow. Chad Dodd, vice president of product management at athenahealth, sat down with MobiHealthNews at the HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition to discuss the company's AI-enabled products and how it distinguishes itself from its competitors. MobiHealthNews: Can you tell me about your AI-enabled products? Chad Dodd: At athenahealth, we've had tech-enabled solutions using AI for the last eight to 10 years.
So, AI is not new in athena and a lot of our systems are automated and provide efficient workflows enabled by AI. Most recently, we've released our Ambient Note solution, which is probably the most forward-thinking AI solution that exists at athena and I should say across the healthcare ecosystem. Through a single click, a patient provider can have a discussion and a dialog and after that, we take that dialog, summarize it into a draft note and insert that note directly into the chart for and on behalf of the physician.
So, it truly changes and transforms how that physician engages with the patient, but removes the burden of the documentation element and puts that all into the chart, simply and easily for that physician and for that care team. So, it really transforms their experience, removes hours of documentation, makes it simpler, makes it a more accurate note and actually improves the overall coding and billing side. MHN: There are other companies offering similar products like Commure, which bought Augmedix last year .
What is the difference between what they are doing and athena does? Dodd: A couple of things that we do when it's all embedded into the athena experience. So a physician that knows the athena UI and the experience, it's all right there, embedded. And the second one is, is the node.
It goes directly into the athena workflow. So, with one click, it's automatically into the athena chart, so it can be reviewed and then signed, and then the counter closed on that same day. The other experience we do that's a little bit unique across athena is we provide access to different models, different AI solution sets, all within athena with the same user experience.
We know that one physician documents differently than another physician, and so we want to be able to tailor that experience specifically for that clinician themselves. And so we partner with three different vendors that we then enable through the athena experience itself, to give optionality for positions and providers alike. MHN: What are you doing here at HIMSS and how is the conference going for you? Dodd: HIMSS has been wonderful.
HIMSS has been great. It's great to connect with healthcare IT experts, customers, and partners that are really bringing the healthcare ecosystem together to talk about some of the challenges the industry has, but also to bring up, bring forward, new solutions that are going to help our patients and our providers alike..
