Punjab’s agriculture sector plays a vital role in the national economy and provides employment to a large portion of the population. According to the Punjab Agriculture Department, the sector contributes 19% to Pakistan’s GDP and makes up 75% of the total national agricultural output. The province’s cropped area spans about 17 million hectares, covering 57% of the country’s total cultivated land.

From 2023 to 2024, the Punjab government allocated Rs 15,674.9 million for development and Rs 10,199.88 million for non-development expenditures in agriculture.

The sector employs 40% of Punjab’s labour force. However, the contribution of agriculture to Punjab’s GDP has fallen from 27% to 17.23% between 2016 and 2017.

A study by the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, reveals that soil fertility in the province has declined by 30% over the past decade. Once a thriving sector, agriculture in Punjab now faces major challenges. Moreover, the prices of agricultural products are controlled by the central government, often leaving farmers at a disadvantage.
