The Punjab government has announced a major policy shift to support wheat farmers, allowing unrestricted movement of wheat within and outside the province. According to official details, farmers can now freely transport wheat across provincial borders, enabling access to more lucrative markets and better prices for their produce. For the first time, the private sector will also be permitted to procure wheat, offering farmers greater selling options and fostering a more competitive marketplace.
This deregulation is expected to enhance market dynamics by encouraging competition among buyers, ultimately benefiting farmers with improved pricing. The decision was made during a high-level meeting on wheat procurement policy chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The meeting reviewed the pre-harvest wheat production outlook and approved several key farmer-friendly measures.
The chief minister commended Punjab’s farmers for achieving record-breaking wheat yields and extended heartfelt appreciation for their hard work. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting farmers' interests, stating, “Farmers are our brothers; their interests will be protected at all costs.” Binance founder named advisor to Pakistan Crypto Council, meets Nawaz Sharif Among other initiatives, the government’s plan to distribute 1,000 tractors free of cost to wheat growers was also highlighted as part of its broader strategy to boost agricultural productivity.
