Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has undertaken a study to check the feasibility of a 20 km long double-decker twin tunnel from Yerawada to Katraj, aimed at diverting traffic away from Pune’s most congested zones, the Indian Express reported Traffic congestion on the Pune roads is among the worst in the country, and various government authorities are working jointly to solve it. Along with some immediate steps, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), district collectorate, PMRDA and traffic police are working on a long-term solution as well. According to the report, quoting officials, the tunnels will bypass city traffic by rerouting vehicles going to other parts of the city.
“The efforts of some changes in traffic management and immediate development of small infrastructure works have shown results with congestion on city roads decreasing by 15 per cent,” the report quoted Collector Jitendra Dudi as saying. Through the rerouting of the vehicle, it will be ensured that vehicles going to other parts of the city do not enter the city. The various escape routes, allowing vehicles to enter and exit the tunnel on the basis of specific destinations, will make it usable for a wider section of commuters.
