Pune: The regional transport office in the city has registered around 39% rise in registration of vehicles in the week leading to Gudi Padwa this year compared to 2024. Swapnil Bhosle, the deputy RTO of Pune told TOI that this year between March 20 and March 28, a total of 10,170 vehicles were registered. "The registrations are still on and the numbers will increase," the official said.

Last year, Gudi Padwa fell on April 9. Between April 1 and April 8, a total of 7,336 vehicles were registered. In 2023, when the festival fell on March 23, 7,706 vehicles were registered in the week leading to the festival.

Figures for Pimpri Chinchwad RTO office were being calculated, officials said. Amar J Sheth, the secretary of Federation of Automobile Dealers' Associations (FADA), told TOI that the spike in vehicle registration was expected. "The first half of March registered slow registration due to the inauspicious period.

But after March 15, vehicle registrations have gone up and we did expect the same to rise due to Gudi Padwa," Sheth told TOI. In Maharashtra, a little more than 663,680 vehicles were registered between Jan and March this week, this year. In the Pune RTO, more than 68,522 vehicles were registered during the same period.

A little more than 43,236 vehicles were registered with Pimpri Chinchwad RTO office during the same period. "We expect a spurt in buying due to the festival. This means that right before the festival (a day or two before March 30), a lot of vehicles will be registered," Sachin Mahajan, state FADA chairman told TOI.

Arun Ubale, a resident of Yerawade, said, "I completed all the formalities for buying a new bike around 10 days ago but haven't taken the delivery yet. Since Gudi Padwa is auspicious, I will take my bike home on March 30." An executive of a two-wheeler retailer on MG Road in Pune said, "A lot of people are coming now.

Most want deliveries on March 30. It will be a struggle," he said. Bhosle said that a couple of days ago, the RTO came up with a fresh series of choice registration numbers.

"Within two days, we received 718 applications. We expect vehicle registrations to be good, too during Gudi Padwa," he said. Stay updated with the latest city news , Air Quality Index (AQI), and weather updates for major cities like Delhi , Mumbai , Noida , and Bangalore on Times of India .
