Pune: The Pune police on Tuesday afternoon destroyed 788kg of drugs worth Rs 7.76 crore at a private firm in Ranjangaon MIDC after obtaining necessary permissions from courts. The drugs, seized in 75 different narcotic cases in 2024, included a wide range of substances like brown sugar, opium, LSD and marijuana.
Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, "These drugs were seized during police raids at various locations across the city last year. They were lying in the police stations since then." Marijuana constituted the largest seizures at 758kg, which was smuggled into Pune from Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
The police had seized ephedrine worth Rs 1.41 crore, cocaine worth Rs 48 lakh, LSD worth Rs 1.52 crore, hashish worth Rs 1.
85 lakh, opium worth Rs 4.27 lakh, heroin worth Rs 39 lakh and "bunta" tablets worth Rs 13,000. "We took necessary permissions from the courts to destroy these drugs," Kumar said.
A court order mandated the drugs disposal in the presence of the drug disposal committee, senior police officers and senior inspectors from police stations. Investigations into the cases revealed an active smuggling network operating illegally in Pune, Mumbai and other cities, the police said, adding that marijuana and mephedrone were in high demand in and around the city and mainly trafficked to Pune from Mumbai. The Pune police have also seized over 1,800kg of mephedrone worth over Rs 3,600 crore, which would be destroyed in the coming days.
"We have successfully dismantled several drug rackets through continuous action against traffickers. The entire legal procedure was followed to destroy the seized narcotics at Ranjangaon MIDC," Kumar said..
