Pune: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Monday urged Pune guardian minister Ajit Pawar to improve the quality of water supplied from Khadakwasla dam , the city's main source, where contamination was reported, leading to outbreak of Guillain-Barré syndrome cases in areas like Nanded. Sule said that she had already discussed the issue with Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav, during which he showed willingness to support an integrated plan to ensure supply of clean and purified water from Khadakwasla and other dams. Govt should order a detailed project report, she told reporters after chairing a meeting with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials on various civic and infrastructure issues.
The city faces significant challenges in garbage mismanagement, poor roads and footpaths, she said. "We are in favour of working out the solutions; govt should act fast." To tackle the problem of poor-quality water, Sule, working president of NCP (SP), said PMC, PMRDA and Pune Zilla Parishad should develop a comprehensive plan with Khadakwasla at the centre.
About the collection of property tax from 34 merged areas, Sule said there is no clarity from state govt. Ahead of last year's general election, govt suspended the collection of tax, but now there is no word on it, she said. "It is being said that the decision is with state govt.
I fear if govt decides to collect tax with retrospective effect, people will face problems. Hence, it is a serious pending policy decision." Sule also said that a financial committee was formed for the effective spending of funds.
"However, workers in the field have reported a lack of utilisation of funds, leading to fears of them being lapsed. We have asked PMC to furnish data in this regard.".
