Gaining experience in the pub industry from an early age, Peter Boardman went onto find employment in youth work before taking over the Oak Tree pub from his parents in 2020. Throughout his career and experiences, Peter said that the main thing that people want is to feel welcome and wanted, and this is the way that he aims to run the boozer, located at the top end of Newton's busy High Street. "Whether you're serving someone a pint or a cup of tea, people just want to feel welcome and wanted, and want a reason to come into your venue. "We know that we're in a prominent building, along a fantastic high street, so we try our best to offer provide a welcoming, safe place to make the area a better place." The Oak Tree's Sunday Roasts are a particular selling point, Peter said, and the venue hosts live music every weekend to create a vibrant atmosphere and support the local, independent music scene. The pub also benefitted from a revamp of its exterior last year, and despite the challenges that have faced the hospitality sector, Peter is confident that the Oak Tree can continue attracting a healthy stream of customers by sticking to what what its good at. "There have been challenges, and there will be more challenges in the new year with managing suppliers and price increases. "But we know what works and what our customers want from us, so we will carry on doing what we're good at and making sure prices are as reasonable and competitive as possible."
