Projects worth Rs 60 cr put up for approval before SMC

Surat: With the financial year coming to an end, the city's civic body is set to approve projects worth Rs 60 crore in the final week. These projects include infrastructure development across various sectors, such as roads, hospitals, and employee appointments. The projects have been submitted for approval at the standing committee meeting scheduled later this week.

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) had proposed a budget of Rs 8,873 crore for 2024-25, incorporating various expenditures to complete the planned projects. To ensure the effective utilization of allocated grants and funds, work on several projects has already commenced. For the upcoming financial year, 2025-26, SMC initially proposed a budget of Rs 9,603 crore, which has been revised to Rs 10,004 crore by the standing committee.



The execution of these projects and development initiatives is expected to play a significant role in the municipal corporation elections later this year. By Feb 2026, a newly elected body of municipal councillors will be formed in SMC. Apart from road infrastructure projects, SMC is set to develop a sports facility under the Utran Rail Over Bridge at a cost of Rs 1.

Road carpeting and repair work, estimated at ₹23 crore, will be carried out in the West Zone. Senior SMC officials will receive permanent appointments following their trial and temporary periods. The permanent appointments of Dipak Hovale as dean of the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) and Swati Desai as deputy municipal commissioner have been proposed.

Additionally, various junior staff members will be appointed on a contractual basis at SMC-run hospitals. "The process of approving these projects was ongoing, but due to certain reasons, it was delayed and has now been presented for approval at the year-end. Planning for these projects has been in progress for the past few weeks," said an SMC official.
