Qatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha M7, Qatar’s premier creative epicentre for fashion, design, and technology, has announced the conclusion of a year-long collaboration aimed at preserving the heritage of Sadu weaving and modernising it to fit into today’s world of design. In partnership with the Ministry of Social Development and Family and NAMA, M7 worked by connecting the weavers with designers to create unique pieces, currently on display at Studio 7 in M7 until April 11, 2025. The initiative marked the first collaboration between M7 and the Ministry of Social Development and Family, with the goal to expand Doha’s community of weavers, modernise the Sadu craft, and encourage designers to incorporate it into their work, ensuring the preservation of this vital cultural practice.

The first step was to foster a new generation of Sadu weavers, beginning with the Ministry organising a training programme for women to learn the craft. M7 then facilitated partnerships between designers and artisans to create collaborative pieces, which are now on display and available for purchase at Studio 7. The pop-up showcases works from talented designers, including Qatar-based Meshael Al Nuaimi (Mhefhef), Brand (MEDD), and international guest designer Abdelgader El Tayeb, a previous Fashion Trust Arabia Prize winner for Debut Talent.

The programme not only preserved traditional crafts like Sadu weaving, but also empowered individuals to master the craft, and transition from consumers to professional craft owners. The designers’ collections beautifully blend the heritage of Sadu weaving with contemporary design elements, bridging Qatar’s traditions with modern expression. Through the Preserving Cultural Crafts programme, M7 facilitated connections with designers and the weavers to create a diverse range of contemporary pieces.

This initiative played a crucial role in integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern design, ensuring Qatari heritage thrives and is celebrated for future generations. This programme not only highlighted the talents of local designers but also aligned with M7’s mission to empower the creative community, inspire local talent, and support the next generation of Qatari design innovators.
