At least 30 people forcibly entered the famous Mata Tekri temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas and allegedly thrashed the priest for denying them entry after the temple was closed for the night, police said. A complaint has been filed by the priest against Jitu Raghuvanshi, who has past criminal records. According to the report, he arrived at the temple on Friday night, with a fleet of eight to 10 cars, PTI reported.

How has the opposition reacted? The opposition Congress has alleged that the son of a BJP MLA was part of the group that trespassed into the temple, however the police has not corroborated the claim. According to PTI, Dewas city Congress president Manoj Rajani said a BJP MLA should keep an eye on his son "who did such an act despite being a Sanatani". What are the authorities doing? City Superintendent of Police Dinesh Agrawal told reporters on Saturday that a group of people asked the priest to open the temple’s gates after hours, upon refusal of which they wrongfully entered the premises and allegedly beat up the priest.

He said it is under investigation whether the son of a BJP MLA was involved in the attack or not. Police are relying on footage of around 50 CCTV cameras, while videos circulating on the social media show the vehicles with red beacons arriving at the foothill of the hilltop temple..
