Prep report: Maslowskis, Cloquet take down Greenway

Thursday's prep report includes volleyball, cross country, girls swimming results, plus soccer games that were played before storms blew into the Northland.

Cloquet got off to a late start but still finished strong, defeating Greenway 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23) in a nonconference volleyball match on Thursday, Sept. 19 The start was delayed until after a tornado warning in the area cleared. Ava Maslowski was too tough for the Raiders to handle, racking up 15 kills in the win and pitching in defensively with nine digs.

Carmen avis also had a big role, with 10 kills, while Ella Maslowski dished out 36 assists to her teammates while also posting a team-leading 17 digs. Ella Anderson piled up 15 digs for the Lumberjacks. ADVERTISEMENT For Greenway, Ava Johnson had 13 kills and 20 digs, while Ari Johnson contributed 10 kills and Makenna Sobztak added 16 digs.



Hermantown 3, Duluth Denfeld 0 Gabi Arntson piled up 13 kills as the Hawks swept the Hunters on Thursday night. Hope Kohanski and Claire Kaups had 13 digs apiece. Northwestern 3, Ashland 0 The Tigers came through in big spots several times to get a bounce-back sweep of Ashland on Thursday night.

Shelby Hessel had a strong all-around game, with nine kills and 19 digs, while Jillian Kunert was big at the net with seven kills and five blocks. Rock Ridge 3, Hibbing 0 The Bluejackets got swept on Thursday despite 22 assists from Emma Kangas. Brooke Siekkinen had eight kills, while she and Addison Fisher had 12-dig performances and Sydnee Moellering posted a team-best 15.

Mountain Iron-Buhl 3, Cherry 1 The Rangers had four different players with at least three aces as they took down Cherry on Thursday night. Ava Luukkonen’s nine kills paced the offense, but three others had at least four kills. ADVERTISEMENT BOYS SOCCER Cloquet-Carlton 6, Proctor 0 Noah Hansen was a playmaker for the Lumberjacks, recording a goal and three assists for visiting Cloquet-Carlton as the teams managed to fit in their Lake Superior Conference contest at Terry Egerdahl Field before the rains came.

Collin Young had a pair of goals for Cloquet-Carlton, while Hudson Snesrud and Rizal Agaton-Howes posted a goal and assist apiece. Cloquet-Carlton goalie Preston Strang made seven saves. GIRLS SWIMMING Hibbing 84, Duluth Denfeld 62 The Bluejackets won two of three relays and took a Lake Superior Conference girls’ swim dual meet from the Hunters on Thursday.

Eighth-grader Gabby Anderson was a double winner for the Hunters, taking the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 29.55 seconds and the 100 free in 1:01.77.

CROSS COUNTRY Gunderson Invite Solon Springs/Northwood’s boys cruised to a victory at the Gunderson Invite in Iron River, the first of three meets used to determine the Northern Lights Conference championship. SS/N recorded 19 points and had five of their runners in the top six individual places. Isaac Dickenson won the race in 18:54.

8 with a 19-second margin, with Jacob Taggart in third. ADVERTISEMENT Washburn claimed the girls’ win, with SS/N in second. Freshman Penelope Burfield finished fourth individually for SS/N.
