Duluth East will send both of its cross country teams to the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Falcon Heights, Minn., after a successful day at the Section 7AAA meet on Thursday in Anoka.
The East boys won the section team championship, while the Greyhounds girls were second to Forest Lake to earn a qualifying spot. ADVERTISEMENT East won the boys competition with 47 team points, seven better than runner-up Blaine. Lachlan Demmer of Coon Rapids was the individual champ in a time of 15 minutes, 49 seconds for the 5 kilometers, while the Greyhounds’ top finisher was Nathaniel Bateman, a sophomore, who took fourth overall about 23 seconds off the lead.
East juniors Mark Goettel and Joey Gustafson wee in the top 10 with finishes of seventh and ninth, respectively, while Will Johnson was 12th and Rory Fischbach 15th. In the girls’ race, Forest Lake pull all of its scoring runners in the top 10 for a dominant total of 26 points, though East, with 66 had a clear margin over third-place Centennial’s 89. Norah Hushagen won the individual title for Forest Lake in 17:32, while the top finisher for East was Anna-Britta Helmer in sixth (18:49).
All five scorers for the Greyhounds finished in the top 20, with Carolina Arvold in 11th, Sasha Wahman in 13th and Taylor Wood in 16th. Carlton/Wrenshall girls claim Class A title Carlton/Wrenshall came away with the team title at the Section 7A girls cross country meet on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Coleraine.
ADVERTISEMENT The Raptors finished with 71 points, while host Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin edged out Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum by a single point with 90. Olivia Pascuzzi of Chisholm was the individual winner by a wide margin in 19:02.6, followed by Lila Champlin and Taylor Covier of GNK, but the trio of Ruth Sandstrom, Isabel Riley and Brielle Simula covered sixth through eighth overall.
GNK also finished second in the boys team standings and earned a trip to state. South Ridge took the title with 53 and GNK had 67. The top two teams and top six runners not already qualified advance to the state meet.
McGregor junior Garrett Guida edged out Carlton/Wrenshall freshman Anders Erickson for the individual crown in 17:01.6 with Erickson three seconds behind. Alex Burckhardt, a senior, was fourth for South Ridge, while GNK’s top runners were juniors Brayden Nielsen in sixth and Bryce Nielsen in eighth.
VOLLEYBALL Superior, Solon Springs eliminated Prep volleyball season in Douglas County came to an end on Thursday night, Oct. 24 after both Superior and Solon Springs were eliminated from regional tournament play on the road. In Divison 1 at Schofield, Wisconsin, the Spartans took a set off fifth-seeded D.
C. Everest, winning the second 27-25 to even the match at one, but Everest dominated the latter two to eliminate Superior. ADVERTISEMENT Second-seeded Prentice bounced the Eagles in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18, 25-16.
