The Evergreen boys basketball team is playing its best basketball at the right time — just in time for the postseason. The Plainsmen’s 67-61 victory Friday over 3A Greater St. Helens League champion Prairie secured their berth to next week’s bi-district tournament.

By virtue of the league’s tiebreaker rules using quality wins, Evergreen earned the 3A GSHL’s final postseason spot over Heritage. Evergreen and Heritage finished tied for third at 4-4 in league after the Timberwolves’ 70-56 win Friday over Kelso, but Evergreen secured the playoff bid because of the win over a higher-ranked Falcons team in the league standings. Powered by Dez Daniel’s game-high 25 points, Evergreen (8-12) enters the postseason on a season-high four-game winning streak.

On Friday, Evergreen led Prairie for the entire second half until the final 38 seconds when Prairie’s Ben Nkansah (17 points) hit a 3 that tied the game at 61-all. A steal and layin by Daniel with 2.3 seconds left — coupled with Evergreen free throws off Prairie technical fouls — sealed it for the Plainsmen.

Evergreen went 4 of 5 on free throws in the closing seconds. Hudson Nellis added 18 points for Evergreen. Carson Morningstar led Prairie with 21 points.
