
Hoquiam and Aberdeen suffered league losses as we review Tuesday’s prep baseball games on the Harbor. ~~~ PREP BASEBALL Rochester 13, Hoquiam 3 Errors proved costly in Hoquiam’s 13-3 loss to Rochester in a 1A Evergreen League game on Tuesday at Rochester High School. The Grizzlies (2-3 overall, 0-2 1A Evergreen) committed six errors in the game, leading to five unearned runs in suffering the five-inning, mercy-rule loss.
Hoquiam tied the game at 1-1 on a Tristan Bland RBI single in the top of the second inning. Trailing 5-1 in the top of the third, Daymond Cole scored on a passed ball followed by an Ethan Byron single to drive in pitcher Joey Bozich to trim the deficit to 5-3. But the Warriors (2-4, 1-3) had five of their eight hits in the fourth inning, leading to five runs. Rochester added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, walking off on the Grizzlies when Wyatt Dahl was hit by a pitch from Hoquiam reliever Aden Hartt to end the game. Despite opening the game striking out the first four batters he faced, Bozich took the loss, allowing five unearned runs on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in three innings pitched.

” Ethan Byron went 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Hoquiam while Bozich had a double and an RBI for the Grizzlies. Hoquiam hosts Rochester at 4 p.m.

~~~ Shelton 11, Aberdeen 1 Aberdeen lost its league-opener 11-1 to Shelton on Tuesday at Pioneer Park in Aberdeen. The Bobcats (3-1, 0-1 2A Evergreen) led 1-0 after shortstop Bubba Jones – on board with a leadoff triple – scored on a double steal in the bottom of the first inning. But Shelton (2-5, 1-1) rallied for five runs on just one base hit as Aberdeen pitchers combined to allow four walks and hit three batters in the top of the second.
The Highclimbers added four runs in the fourth on a single, four walks, a hit batter and an error for a 9-1 lead. A walk and hit batter to lead off the top of the fifth was cashed in by a Jacob Jacoby RBI double followed by a Zaine Scott RBI sacrifice fly to put Aberdeen in an 11-1 hole. The Bobcats were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth to suffer the mercy-rule loss.
Aberdeen starter Chad Fretts took the loss, allowing five earned runs on two hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 1 2-3 innings pitched. Three Bobcats pitchers combined to allow just four hits in the game, but issued 12 free passes. Aside from Jones’ triple, Aberdeen’s Aiden Baker had the only other hit for the Bobcats in the game, a one-out double in the fourth inning.
Aberdeen plays at Shelton at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
