Regardless of the stature of the championship, there is certainly no more intense and contested moment than the end of a football season. And that's especially true in the Premier League, considered to be one of the most competitive leagues in the world. And while the race for the title, the battle for European places or even the fight to stay up draws all the attention, there are other, more individual, stakes that are no less compelling.
The quest for the Golden Glove is a perfect example. Awarded to the goalkeeper with the highest number of clean sheets during the season, it is most often claimed by a member of a top-flight team, but there are exceptions. Since the award's inception in 2005, the Premier League Golden Glove award has been won by some of the division's best goalkeepers.
And, as the 2024/25 Premier League campaign draws to a close, this article has established a ranking of the top 10 current contenders for the award. Premier League Golden Glove Race for the 2024/2025 Season Rank Name Club Nationality Games Played Clean Sheets Clean Sheet Percentage Save Percentage 1. Matz Sels Nottingham Forest Belgium 29 12 41.
4% 73.2% 2. David Raya Arsenal Spain 29 11 37.
9% 76.8% 3. Dean Henderson Crystal Palace England 28 9 32.
1% 70.6% 4. Jordan Pickford Everton England 29 9 31% 69.
7% 5. Alisson Liverpool Brazil 21 8 38.1% 71.
9% 6. Andre Onana Manchester United Cameroon 29 8 27.6% 68.
9% 7. Bart Verbruggen Brighton Netherlands 27 6 22.2% 66.
7% 8. Ederson Manchester City Brazil 19 5 26.3% 69.
6% 9. Kepa Arrizabalaga Bournemouth Spain 22 5 22.7% 76% 10.
Martin Dubravka Newcastle United Slovakia 10 5 50% 70.7% 10 Martin Dubravka — 5 Clean Sheets The case of Martin Dubravka deserves a closer look. Initially seen as a replacement for Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal, the 36-year-old Slovakian keeper has taken advantage of his team-mate's absence, who has been sidelined for several weeks with a knee injury, to earn his place in the starting line-up.
His rise to prominence should be seen in the context of the Magpies' good results (including wins over Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham) between mid-December and mid-January. The Magpies even recorded more clean sheets (5) in 10 appearances than the Englishman did in 18 (4). Enough to keep the competition alive.
9 Kepa Arrizabalaga — 5 Clean Sheets You may be surprised to learn that Kepa Arrizabalaga boasts the third-highest save percentage - 76% - in the Premier League this season. An unexpected renaissance for the Spanish keeper, on loan from Chelsea to Bournemouth, whose future at Stamford Bridge seems more uncertain than it has ever been. Unless, perhaps, his performances with the Cherries, the sixth team in the league with the most shots on target after 29 games, reshuffle the deck for 2025/26.
Whatever the case, the question of the 30-year-old's future is sure to be the subject of much debate in the run-up to the summer transfer window. 8 Ederson — 5 Clean Sheets Like his Manchester City team, Ederson has endured an eventful 2024/25 campaign. The Brazilian keeper was forced to miss six matches due to a variety of physical ailments, and his number two, Stefan Ortega, stole the show on several occasions.
Pep Guardiola recently reminded us, however, that this is no reason to question his status as a first-choice keeper. An unwavering support that not even the repeated mistakes he has been guilty of in recent months have been able to shake. At least for the time being.
Under contract to the Skyblues until 2026, the question of his future is likely to take centre stage in the coming weeks. 7 Bart Verbruggen — 6 Clean Sheets Faced with fierce competition from Jason Steele last season, Bart Verbruggen took advantage of his second campaign in England to finally establish himself as a permanent fixture in the Brighton goal. Yet a glance at his statistics reveals something of a paradox.
While he has played more minutes and recorded more clean sheets in 27 appearances (6) than he did in 21 (4) during the 2023/24 season, his effectiveness has been less striking. This is largely due to a lower save percentage than last year - 72.5% compared to 66.
7%. But don't panic, Verbruggen is still a young keeper with a bright future ahead of him. 6 Andre Onana — 8 Clean Sheets Considering Manchester United 's current season, it seems almost unreal that Andre Onana's name could appear on such a list.
And yet it is. After all, few would doubt the Cameroonian's qualities. Moreover, the fact that he is one of the goalkeepers with the most shots on target (119) so far this season makes his eight clean sheets all the more impressive.
And if the Red Devils are ‘only’ 13th in the table, they certainly owe it to the former Inter Milan man. However, given the flimsiness of his defence, the chances of him winning the Golden Glove are slim to none. 5 Alisson — 8 Clean Sheets Perhaps Alisson would occupy a different place in this ranking had he not been sidelined by a hamstring injury for almost two months.
In fact, it's a safe bet that he would be even closer to the top than he is at the moment. It has to be said that Liverpool are having a sensational season. Only beaten by Nottingham Forest this season, the Reds are more favourites than ever to succeed Manchester City.
And their Brazilian goalkeeper has played no small part in that. Eight clean sheets and just 18 goals conceded in 21 appearances is a remarkable feat. It's a record that could be even bettered, provided Arne Slot's men emerge victorious from the important fixtures still awaiting them at the end of the season.
Arguably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League right now . The Premier League is regarded by many as the 'best league in the world', but only seven different clubs have won it since it was rebranded. 4 Jordan Pickford — 9 Clean Sheets It should come as no surprise that Jordan Pickford is once again a contender for the Golden Glove.
The 31-year-old man has been one of the Premier League's finest goalkeepers for several seasons now — and one of Everton's best goalkeepers in history . However, the recognition he has received pales in comparison to his achievements, having on several occasions prevented the Toffees from falling further than they already had. And the 2024/25 season is yet another example.
With 81 saves to his name, he is fifth in the list of goalkeepers with the most shots on target (119) and is the only player in his position to have a 100% success rate from the penalty spot (two saves from two attempts). 3 Dean Henderson — 9 Clean Sheets Although he is constantly relegated to a second-rate role with the Three Lions, Dean Henderson is nonetheless one of the most effective goalkeepers in the league. His rise to prominence was undoubtedly greatly influenced by Sam Johnstone's departure for Wolves last summer.
At 28, the Crystal Palace player is now the English goalkeeper with the highest save percentage in the Premier League (70.6%) and the one who concedes the fewest goals per game (1.18).
All of which adds up to a better understanding of the Eagles' dynamic and one of the reasons why they occupy third place on the podium of the best defences in the top flight. 2 David Raya — 11 Clean Sheets Already a winner last season, David Raya is hoping to retain his Golden Glove award this season. And if he does, he will become only the fourth player in Premier League history to achieve the feat.
In any case, his 11 clean sheets make him one of the overwhelming favourites to succeed himself. But that's not the only reason. The Spaniard is also at the helm of the league's best defence, with only 24 clean sheets after 29 games.
Not to mention the fact that he is the second most decisive goalkeeper in the top flight, with a 76.8% save rate. 1 Matz Sels — 12 Clean Sheets Nobody, not even the most ardent Reds fan, could have predicted that Nottingham Forest would have such a season.
With a six-point lead over fifth-placed Manchester City and a five-point advantage over fourth-placed Chelsea, Nuno Espirito Santo's men can legitimately start dreaming of an unlikely Champions League berth next season. GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Matz Sels could become only the second Belgian player to win the Golden Glove award — the other is Thibaut Courtois. The reward for a great season in which Matz Sels' repeated performances have undoubtedly played an important role.
With 12 clean sheets (including some against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City), the Belgian is the goalkeeper to have kept his clean sheet the most times in the Premier League this season. Quite simply. All statistics per FBref correct as of (10/04/2025).
