Ashlin Alveena Prasad believes change c omes through unity. She is set to champion environmental sustainability as she represents Fiji at the Miss Earth 2024 competition, organised by Carousel Productions in Manila, Philippines. For the 18-year-old from Nadi, the pageant is more than beauty or winning a crown-it’s a platform to promote soil regeneration, a cause close to her heart.
“My message at Miss Earth 2024 will centre on soil regeneration as the foundation for sustainability,” said Ms Prasad. Healthy soil enhances biodiversity, combats climate change, and secures food resources. “This is especially crucial for countries like Fiji, which depend on natural resources for their future resilience.
” A former student of Swami Vivekananda College, she draws inspiration from her upbringing and connection with nature, focusing on sustainable practices to benefit both Fiji and the planet. Alongside her advocacy, Ms Prasad plans to highlight Fiji’s cultural heritage by wearing Fijian-inspired designs and sharing an introductory video detailing her personal journey and environmental commitment. Her pageantry career started as a top 10 finalist in Miss Universe Fiji 2023, and she has represented Fiji on international stages, including the Queen of International Tourism 2024.
Beyond pageantry, she studies entrepreneurship and works as an Indian translator at the Word of Life Christian Centre, where she is a member. “Representing Fiji on this global platform is a dream come true. It’s a chance not only to showcase our islands’ beauty and culture but also to promote environmental sustainability,” she said.
Ms Prasad leaves for the Philippines tomorrow, with the competition ending on November 9. Her preparations include mastering topics like biodiversity, climate change, and global environmental issues, ensuring she is well-prepared for the queen and answer round. Through social media, she continues to raise awareness about sustainability and hopes her advocacy will leave a lasting impact.
