ISLAMABAD - Key government ally, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) yesterday sought opposition Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI)’s support against the controversial canals project. Earlier, during the National Assembly session, members of the PPP staged a protest over the exclusion of their resolution concerning canal construction on the Indus River from the day’s agenda. Speaking to journalists later, senior PPP leader Shazia Marri said the party had submitted the resolution on April 7, opposing the construction of new canals off the Indus River.
“This is a critical issue for Sindh, and we demanded it be discussed in the House,” she maintained. Marri accused the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) of not supporting the resolution. “Despite a response from the PML-N in the House, PPP remains firm on its demand for the passage of this resolution.
We will not back down on this life-and-death matter for the people of Sindh,” she asserted. She blamed PML-N’s provincial ministers in Punjab of making “incendiary and divisive statements” regarding the matter and criticized PTI for its “irresponsible conduct” during the debate. “It was truly unfortunate to witness PTI members disrupt such an important discussion,” she said.
Marri also reminded the House that it was Imran Khan’s government that had approved the construction of two canals on the Indus River - projects the Sindh government had strongly opposed. US stocks down as trade war with China escalates Tags: ppp seeks pti support.
