FOR 15 years, the people from two wards in Kerowagi district, Chimbu Province, suffered from weak power supply, which a lot of times left them in the dark. The people from ward 7 and 8 in the Gena/Waugla local level government on Sunday celebrated the commissioning of a new power transformer at Kutn village. The new transformer has ended the power problem encountered from the existing two phase power supply following the 7km feeder road from Kigamuglo to Karmel.

In the past, the power supply was so weak that many homes only used it for light and charging phones. They didn’t use many other electrical appliances because of weak current. Sometimes, few house received power supply while others were in the dark.

The 15-year power problem was finally resolved on Sunday after one of their sons, Michael Konduwage Francis, bought a new transformer and installed it. PNG Power manager in Kundiawa, Michael Degemba, who witnessed the commissioning, commended Mr Konduwage for installing the transformer to address the weak power problem. He told the people that since they installed the transformer, PNG Power would come in and help with power poles and service lines.

Mr Degemba said that strict rules would be applied when giving out these materials. He told the people to look after the service provided. Kerowagi chief executive officer Philip Bomai said that he wants to see the power supply to reach Gena.

Mr Bomai challenged other educated elites in Kerowagi to do like what Michael did instead of criticising Kerowagi District Development Authority (KDDA) on social media. He also said that the KDDA would put gravel on the Kigamuglo to Karmel road now under going maintenance. Mr Konduwage said that the main purpose of installing the transformer was to ensure all the people have full access to power supply.

He said that he wants people to use other electrical appliances in their homes unlike in the past. Mr Konduwage said that students must sleep well and do night study using light. “I want to see my village and surrounding villages become modern villages,” he said.
