A crochet enthusiast has revealed her latest creation on a postbox in Brighton. Amanda MacMath, also known as Nanny Bear Crochet, unveiled the new topper outside the Royal Mail delivery office on North Road. The topper features a crocheted delivery van, post box and two posties.
Amanda was approached by Royal Mail to create the topper for the new box. The post box is the second in the country to display the King's monogram, the first having been revealed in South Cambridgeshire. “Everyone was so amazed. A lorry going past even beeped. They were all very pleased.
” The topper took Amanda around 30 hours to complete. She said: “I received the message about the topper on the Wednesday and it took about a week to complete. I made it during breaks and after work.
” Amanda told The Argus how she was inspired to take up crochet by her nan who suffered with dementia. She said: “Before it got too bad I asked her to teach me how to do a chain, and she did. I then looked online and tried to learn more.
“There was a class running in my local area which had just started up, run by a lovely lady called Eleonora or known as the Coastal Crochet. I went to a few classes and I was hooked, excuse the pun!” Since starting her crochet journey, Amanda has made a number of other post-box toppers which have been spotted across Sussex. In May 2023, she crocheted King Charles to mark his coronation for the post box at Telscombe Cliffs.
Amanda now teaches once a month at Ida’s House in Lewes and hopes to inspire a new generation of crochet enthusiasts. She said: “I want to get younger people there; crochet is really fashionable. It’s not just for grannies.
