EXCLUSIVE : Portishead co-founder Geoff Barrow has just wrapped his first feature film dubbed Game , which he co-wrote and produced via Invada Films, the newly launched arm of his Bristol-based Invada Records. The thriller, which stars Marc Bessant and Jason Williamson and is the directorial debut of filmmaker John Minton , is set against the backdrop of the 1990s rave culture where two men – one a thief and one a poacher – must use their wits to survive. It’s an idea that originated through a conversation between Barrow and Bessant, who then brought Minton and Rob Williams aboard to help with writing the story.
Williams wrote the final screenplay. Watch on Deadline “John Minton and I have worked together for over 20 years on music projects and have always talked about making a feature together,” said Barrow.
“The same goes for Marc, who I’ve worked closely with for many years. I’ve been a fan of Jason Williamson’s work as well as Rob Williams’ through 2000AD and we’ve been writing film ideas together for the last few years. “The experience of making Game has been a joy from start to finish as mostly all the people involved are friends or friends of friends based around the Bristol area.
For me, it’s an exciting new career path that I can’t wait to do more of. I’ve already got another two films in development.” Williamson is the lead singer and lyricist for British band Sleaford Mods and is also known for his work as an actor in Bird , Peaky Blinders and Landscapers .
Bessant is an actor, writer and designer. Having played a variety of stage and screen roles – including for directors Alice Lowe and Todd Komarnicki – Game marks his debut lead role in a feature film. He’s collaborated with many musicians and filmmakers including Portishead and Peter Gabriel.
Minton’s work as spanned across the music sphere, having worked with artists such as Simple Minds, Portishead, Noel Gallagher and The Pretenders in live arenas around the world. Recently, he’s created music videos for Beth Gibbons, Sleaford Mods and Gazell Twin, plus many more stretching back more than 20 years. He also edited Esther May Campbell’s BAFTA winning short September .
Williams currently has series and features in development with The Imaginarium Corestar, Anton Entertainment and Rebellion Studios. His comic series Unfollow is being produced by Margot Robbie’s Lucky Chap and being developed for HBO. He has also written for DC Comics and Marvel Comics.
Barrow is the founding member of British band Portishead. More recently, he’s been known for his work as a film composer with his writing partner Ben Salisbury. Their credits include Ex Machina , Civil War , Black Mirror , and Annihilation .
His Invada Records label has released scores such as Stranger Things , Drive and Red Dead Redemption . Game marks his debut as a co-writer and producer..
