Rugby League: THE NCDC backed Port Moresby Vipers franchise must have a strong content from the annually staged NCD Governor’s Cup. With over 1600 players from 80 teams to choose from, there is bound to be highly competitive players to choose from. This is the concern raised by former Port Moresby Vipers and Post Puma hardman and NCD Governor’s Cup director Billy Aki.
Aki said: “The Governor’s Cup competition is a huge pool to choose effective players that will play with a lot of passion to represent their city in the Digicel EXXONMobil Cup semi-professional competition. “Year in year out the Port Moresby Vipers have not produced what they should be doing..
.and that’s dominating this elite competition. “It’s time to pick players that will genuinely represent the city and their community.
“If the Hagen Eagles can do it, I can’t see no reason why NCD which has a bigger base cannot do it as well. “We have a lot of raw talent that only needs to be given the opportunity to play at another level. “If the NCDC owns the franchise, then the Governor’s Cup should be where a strong content of players could be considered going forward.
“I think it is time the Vipers franchise start opening their doors to the selection process, so that we can start wearing that Vipers jumper with pride again for all NCD residents to once again follow their team,” added Aki. Aki further said he hopes this call is given serious thought and not thrown under the carpet..
