A town centre chippy has been named 'one of the best in the country' at an awards ceremony over the weekend. Bolton's Olympus Fish and Chip Restaurant , Great Moor Street, started off in 1960 as a small fish bar but now occupies 14 units. England's Business Awards named the food haunt in the top 12 across England.
Owner, Tasos Pattichis, said: "We were named in the top 12, but unfortunately we didn't get the top spot, but who knows maybe we are second!" Tasos believes the place's "personal touch" is behind their success. "Absolutely loads of our customer base are people that come back, time and time again." Olympus was originally started by Tasos' parents, since he took over he has expanded what was a small chippy into a large restaurant, buying up more premises bit by bit. Tasos explained: "At first, our most popular meal was fish, chips, and mushy peas.
"With cod of course because Bolton is a cod area. "But since, we've upgraded the menu to include new items, now we do cheese pies, steak and mushroom pies, Moussaka, burgers. "We're even keeping up with the trend at the moment with loaded fries.
" Alongside Tasos is his jack-of-all-trades personal assistant, Alisha Heathcote, who does everything from being a secretary to working behind the counter. Tasos added: "When staff come in we try our best to put them in lots of different areas to improve their skills." Olympus was also handed a Good Food Award earlier this month.
Tasos said: "It's all because I grew up alongside mum and dad, and watched how they ran the place, and how they treated customers. "And to think we only started off as a humble chippy!" Olympus is open every day except Sunday from 9.30am to 7pm, and their food is available for delivery and takeaway.
