At the 11th Breakthrough Prize Ceremony in Santa Monica, global music icon and pop sensation Katy Perry delivered a moment of pure sartorial theatre for fashion lovers – not once but twice. Dressed in custom Gaurav Gupta couture both the times, Perry made a stunning impression both on the red carpet and onstage, highlighting the avant-garde craftsmanship that has come to define the popular Indian designer’s label. An architectural ode to design: For her red carpet appearance, Perry chose a silver-blue reptilian glass embroidery gown from Gupta’s acclaimed ‘Aarohanam’ collection, first unveiled at Paris Couture Week SS’24.
The column silhouette, inspired by serpentine fluidity, sculpted her form with graceful precision, while the hand-embroidered beadwork shimmered under the lights with a hypnotic interplay of texture and reflection. Reportedly, this stunning ensemble was crafted over four months and required more than 800 hours of handwork. Speaking about her gorgeous cape style dress and superb styling, the Firework singer wrote on her Instagram, “Last night’s intergalactic federation maMA, moonbootz tha haus space slay for the @breakthrough prize awards. no but for real, so honored to bring my little bit of Firework frequency to a night dedicated to supporting some of the most brilliant minds in science making incredible, world changing breakthroughs! Thank you for having me.” (SIC) Later in the evening, as she took to the stage for her performance, Perry underwent a dramatic transformation with her choice of ensemble by the same designer.
For her live performance, she emerged in a dramatic galactic armour jacket dress from Gupta’s AW’24 ‘Jyotirgamaya’ collection, and showcased the engineered movement of the garment accentuated with seamless motion. The sculpted black jacket, embellished with gleaming glass paillettes and precision embroidery in crystals, refracted light with every gesture, creating a spectacle of strength and shine throughout her stage presence. According to the designer’s post, the ensemble required 480 hours of artisan work by a dedicated team of five.
