JAMMU: Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Gen Upendra Dwivedi and other Army officials on Wednesday condoled the death of five soldiers in a road accident near the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K’s Poonch district the previous day. J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah also expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “General Upendra Dwivedi COAS and All Ranks of Indian Army express profound grief on the loss of Subedar Dayanand Tirakannavar, Lance Havildar Anoop, Naik Ghadge Shubham Samadhan, Sepoy Nikure Digamber and Sep Mahesh Marigond in a tragic and unfortunate road accident, while on operational duty in Poonch, J&K.

Five soldiers died and as many were critically injured after an Army vehicle ferrying soldiers of the 11 Maratha Light Infantry skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in Balnoi area near a forward post along LoC in Poonch’s Mendhar sub-division late Tuesday. In a statement following the accident, the defence spokesperson had ruled out any terror angle in the tragedy, indicating that the driver may have possibly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn on the road.
