It came down to the wire on Tuesday, as the Green Wave grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 2-1, over Hammond in extra innings at home. The game was tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth when Ethan Laurent singled, scoring the winning run. Both teams were strong on the bump.
Ponchatoula pitchers struck out four, while Hammond sat down four as well. The Tors opened the scoring in the first after Justin Harland singled, scoring one run. Lawson Raiford walked, which helped the Green Wave tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
Ethan Cubias began the game for Ponchatoula. The senior hurler gave up four hits and one run over four and one-third innings, striking out two and walking three. Harland stepped on the hill first for Hammond.
The starting pitcher allowed two hits and one run over six innings, striking out four and walking four. Senior Chandler Jones tossed three innings of zero-run ball for Ponchatoula in relief. The reliever gave up two hits, striking out two and walking none.
Laurent went 1-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Jones, Lane Corbin and Laurent each collected one hit for the Green Wave. Ponchatoula turned one double play in the game.
Josh Bush and Reid Hoover each collected two hits for Hammond. Ponchatoula were victorious against Hammond 6-5 on Thursday away from home. An error put the Tors on the board in the bottom of the first.
Hammond committed an error, which helped Ponchatoula tie the game at one in the top of the second. The Green Wave took the lead in the top of the third. Ethan Laurent singled, scoring one run, to give Ponchatoula the lead, 2-1.
The Tors recaptured the lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the fifth when Justin Harland tripled, scoring two runs, and Brayden Perrin induced Josh Triolo to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored. Ponchatoula regained the lead, 6-4, in the top of the seventh when an error scored two runs. Junior Jeremiah Bess doubled, scoring one run, and an error scored another.
Hammond’s rally fell short in the bottom half of the last inning, as the Tors managed one run. Perrin led things off on the hill for Ponchatoula. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and four runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking four.
Triolo opened the game for Hammond. The starter gave up four hits and three runs (one earned) over six innings, striking out six and walking two. Jace McKinney and Michael Farris each appeared in relief for the Green Wave.
Bess led Ponchatoula with two hits in four at bats. Lane Corbin and Laurent each drove in two runs for Ponchatoula. Reid Hoover and Harland were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected one hit for Hammond.
Harland went 1-for-4 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in. Ponchatoula welcomes Opelousas Catholic today for its final regular season contest..
