POLICE have retained the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl Competition 2024, after they beat Army 20-19 in a captivating match at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. The men in blue retained their dominant grip over the prestigious Sukuna tanoa through penalties conceded by Ponipate Tuberi and Kini Douglas, as well as tries scored by Tuberi and Inoke Ravuiwasa. Army, despite falling short, advanced through the match with two penalties conceded by Jeremaia Tavai, one by Inia Tawalo and tries by Rokoua Rasaku and Sevuloni Lutu.
At the final hooter, Douglas failed to successfully kick a penalty for Police, however they still emerged victorious in the end. Following the thriller finale, a jubilant and grateful Solomoni Nute, the winning coach, acknowledged his side for their determination during the match. “We thank the boys for giving their all, even though it was last minute, but we maintained our culture and that is to defend our own line and we thank the boys for the effort and for emptying the cylinder and we won again,” Nute said.
He added the mindset of utilizing the entirety of the game was crucial and credited it as a key factor in their triumph yesterday as well. With the men from Nasova retaining the prestigious tanoa for a third year, he dedicated their win to the Fiji Police Force, noting the win was the icing on the cake in the force’s 150th year. Meanwhile, Ponipate Tuberi was named the man of the match for his dynamic performance during the match.
