CIVIL servants have once again been reminded to adhere to the law after a government vehicle driver was arrested by police on Friday morning. In a statement, Fiji Police said the driver was arrested for a case of drunk driving. “There will be no double standards in the application of the law,” the police statement said.

“Following a tip-off, Nasinu police officers intercepted a government vehicle in Makoi as the driver was alleged to have been driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody where he was tested and found to have been in breach of the prescribed limit.” Meanwhile, acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci said the vehicle was seized.

He confirmed the permanent secretary of the concerned ministry was also informed about the incident. Mr Raikaci said traffic officers conducting snap checks would also carry out necessary checks on government vehicle drivers, which includes police vehicles. He said this would ensure government assets were not being abused and used for unauthorised runs.

Mr Raikaci also reiterated these measures were being enforced to ensure fair treatment for all drivers, as there was no exception to the rule of law..
