A LOCAL magistrate has granted two Mutare-based policemen US$100 bail each for allegedly beating up Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) officials. The duo of Sergeant Mduduzi Makina (39) and Constable Elliot Gava (42) stationed at Sakubva Police Station in Mutare, were recently arrested on allegations of manhandling and injuring ZACC officials, who had arrested a police officer for bribery. Makina and Gava appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court Tuesday and were granted US$100 each.
They will return to court on January 10, 2025. The State’s case is that on December 11, 2024, Makina and Gava were on duty at a checkpoint along the Mutare-Masvingo road, near Mutare Teachers College, when the ZACC team approached. During surveillance, the ZACC investigators noticed that some police officers were soliciting bribes from motorists.
The ZACC team closed in to apprehend Constable Peace Muchenje and seized a roadblock declaration book which they wanted to keep as an exhibit. It was averred that Makina and Gava then confronted the ZACC officers, insisting that they should hand over the declaration book and a tussle ensued. Accused persons pulled one of the ZACC investigators from the driver’s seat, plucked off the car keys from the ignition and twisted his arm.
The duo then grabbed the declaration book and fled from the scene..
