A police officer who claimed “I’m one of you boys” after he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving has resigned. PC Scott McMillan was seen on CCTV at around 3am on June 5 driving a white Volkswagen Polo erratically in Bridgend town centre. Officers attended the scene and found the vehicle parked with its highlights on and no driver present.
Mr McMillan was stood outside the vehicle and repeatedly denied that he had been driving. He said he had only just got to the car and had gone to get his phone charger. He then informed officers that he had consumed a couple of cocktails around three hours earlier.
When he was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the legal limit, Mr McMillan told the officers “I’m one of you boys” and that he was “one of them”. He was taken to Queens Road Police Station in Bridgend where he provided a further sample of breath, which was under the prescribed limit and then released from custody. He later resigned from the police prior to a hearing held by South Wales Police on November 2 after he admitted he had lied to officers about not driving the vehicle.
Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan, who held the hearing, said: “There is no room in South Wales Police for this type of behaviour. “The Standards of Professional Behaviour apply the moment you walk through the door. “This type of behaviour whether on or off duty will not be tolerated in any way.
Police officers should be trusted to the ends of the earth.” In a statement released following his resignation, Mr McMillan said: “I understand fully that my actions have resulted in the end of my police career. “I am deeply remorseful not just for myself but also for the embarrassment and shame that this has caused South Wales Police and yourself as the Chief Constable.
