State police say a California man was driving more than 100 miles per hour on Route 188 through Jefferson Borough in July moments before he crashed into another car, killing the other motorist. Arin Christopher Dyne, 21, was charged Tuesday with homicide by vehicle and several summary counts in connection with the July 16 crash that killed Linda Kay Morris. Police said Dyne was driving 101 mph in his pickup truck just moments before he crashed into the SUV driven by Morris as she turned from Washington Street onto Route 188 in the borough.

Morris, 55, of Jefferson, died at the scene from her injuries after her vehicle sustained heavy damage on the driver’s side. When first responders arrived, they found Dyne lying on the pavement, and he was later flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. A Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company paramedic who treated Dyne at the scene later recounted to investigators that Dyne claimed he was driving about 60 mph at the time of the crash, according to court documents.

But Dyne’s onboard computer in his pickup truck showed he was traveling 85 mph at the moment of impact in a section of roadway that is marked with a 35 mph speed limit, according to court documents. Police wrote in charging documents that Dyne’s “actions were extremely reckless” due to exceeding the speed limit by 66 mph through the borough seconds before crashing into the other car. Investigators added that surveillance video showing the aftermath of the crash indicated it was a high-speed collision.

District Judge Thomas Ankrom arraigned Dyne on the felony homicide by vehicle charge Tuesday afternoon, and he was released on $50,000 unsecured bond. No defense attorney was listed for Dyne in online court documents..
