The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday its personnel are continuously monitoring the situation at the EDSA Shrine even as the number of people who gathered there have decreased to around 20 this morning. PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said that no untoward incidents were reported since supporters of the Duterte family have started flocking at EDSA Shrine on Tuesday, November 26. “As of 7 a.
m. this morning po ay tahimik naman po doon sa paligid ng [it was quiet around the] EDSA Shrine,” Fajardo said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview. “Meron tayong mga around 200 na nagbabantay diyan pero doon sa mga nagra-rally ay mga nasa 20 na lamang ‘yung naiiwan do’n.
Bagamat maliit na bilang ay binabantayan pa rin natin sila,” she added. (We have around 200 personnel monitoring there, but among the rallyists, only around 20 were left. Although this is a small number, we are still keeping an eye on them.
) Some supporters earlier conducted a program until 1 a.m. to show support for Vice President Sara Duterte and former president Rodrigo Duterte.
They said they wanted to allot a day in which they can express themselves in relation to the recent events in the country. The PNP, in return, said it would interfere with the gathering of crowds at the shrine if traffic would be already affected. The police also released a video showing that some supporters were offered money in exchange for their presence at the EDSA Shrine.
The allegations were refuted by some supporters. The EDSA Shrine was established in December 1989 as a dedication to Mary, Queen of Peace who was believed to have played a part in the peaceful and bloodless People Power Revolution that ousted former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1986.
It was referred to as “Holy Ground” after another peaceful edition of People Power took place in EDSA in January 2001. —RF, GMA Integrated News.
