VA’A: THE PNG Canoeing Association have donated two canoes (V6) and 12 paddles to Member for Hiri-Koiari Keith Iduhu as a way of encouraging the electorate to join the association. Association President Pole Kassman is hopeful that with this presentation they can set up a paddling club like the three other clubs in the regattas. “So I’m hoping that they’ll be the fourth club, as we currently have three registered clubs now,” she said.

Kassman said the canoes are two of 16 used during the 2015 Pacific Games hosted here in Port Moresby. The canoes are the Legacy Canoes from the Games. “There were 16 canoes that were utilised at the 2015 Pacific Games here in Port Moresby, and we won the first ever gold medal for PNG in the sport of Va’a in the V12 event, beating out champions Tahiti and was an historical achievement for us.

” Kassman who travelled to Boera to make the presentation on Tuesday said: “Logistics in transporting these canoes to destinations further than Boera costs a lot of money. “ I look forward to other centres who are willing to bear these costs to come forward and put their hands up, and we can pay for the transportation cost and PNGCA will gladly ship it to the desired province.” She said that hopefully the canoes signify the beginning of the Hiri-Koiari Club and they can be able to participate in the monthly regattas held and hosted by various affiliated clubs in and around the coastline, with the last regatta staged in Hula down the coast.
