1 2 3 Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to appoint a consultant early next month to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed Yerawada-Katraj twin tunnel project, PMRDA officials said on Saturday. PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase told TOI that the consultant would be appointed in the first week of April and they expected to submit the feasibility report within three months of the appointment. "The chief minister sought a feasibility study.

The consultants, besides giving the technical and financial viability, are expected to provide model details for operations. Once the report is ready, we will submit it to the CM," Mhase said. After the CM approves the feasibility report, Mhase may issue directions to suggest a suitable model and work on the financial aspects of the project, followed by the appointment of a contractor.

"By Dec, we should have the contractor in place," the PMRDA chief said. Once the contractor is appointed, the project is expected to be completed by 2029, depending on the technology. The feasibility study will not only assess the viability of the project, but also explore various implementation models, including engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and public-private partnership (PPP) with options like build-operate-transfer (BOT) and hybrid annuity model (HAM).

On March 28, PMRDA published a tender seeking the appointment of a consultancy agency to conduct the study for the construction of a twin tunnel or double-decker twin tunnel (underground), with spur and escape routes. The selected agency will be required to submit a detailed feasibility report (DFR) within three months, assessing the technical, economic and financial viability of the infrastructure initiative. CM Devendra Fadnavis earlier chaired a PMRDA meeting on Feb 12 and approved the project in principle.

According to the CM, the tunnel will ensure seamless travel between Yerawada and Katraj, one of the city's most congested stretches. "This is a transformative project for Pune's urban mobility. The twin-tunnel concept will provide much-needed relief to one of the most congested corridors in the city," another PMRDA official added.
