Pune: The civic body is exploring options of constructing a grade separator or a flyover to reduce congestions at Sangamwadi junction (Sadalbaba Durgah Chowk) in Yerawada Four key roads from Sangamwadi, airport, Yerawada, and Deccan College meet at the crossing. Commuters said that they have to wait for long to cross the junction. Regular travellers said that vehicular movement has gone up in the area in the recent months, with many travelling via Sangamwadi Chowk , instead of Bundgarden Road and Mangaldas Road, owing to traffic diversions for Sadhu Vaswani Chowk work.

Former corporators from the area said that they have already approached the civic administration with a demand to streamline vehicular movement at the junction. Sanjay Bhosale, former corporator from Yerawada, said that the issue of traffic congestion in the area was raised at PMC 's general body many times. "The vehicular population has gone up manifold.

Local residents are suffering because of frequent traffic snarls," he said. Aalok Madan, who works at a private firm in Yerawada, said that vehicles spend at least 10 minutes to cross the junction in the evening. "Long queues of vehicles are often seen stretching from Yerawada towards the junction.

A stretch from Deccan College also remains busy. The roads are wide enough to make provision for a flyover considering the increasing vehicular population," Madan added. Most MSRTC and private luxury buses that travel from Pune towards Marathwada and Vidarbha opt for this chowk to reach Nagar Road.

PMC officials said that they are conducting inspections at the junction to streamline traffic. "Our main intention will be to streamline traffic flow at the chowk. In addition to the possibility of a grade separator and flyover, we will check if the existing roads can be widened, especially with regards to taking a left turn, which will provide more space for vehicles," an official said.
