Prayagraj: Efforts to provide an international-level stadium to the Sangam city have begun with the executive committee of Prayagraj Municipal Corporation passing a resolution in this regard. In the recently held meeting of the all-important decision-making body of the PMC, the members unanimously passed the proposal for the same. Similar to the one in Kanpur, Lucknow, or the stadium coming up in Varanasi, the international stadium will be a blessing for local talent and sports enthusiasts who lack such a facility.
Mayor Umesh Chandra Ganesh Kesarwani has instructed officials to identify land in the Gangapar area for the project. If all goes as planned, the stadium will be constructed on a large plot in the Jhunsi area, with Sallahpur also being considered as a potential site. The proposal for the stadium was presented by the Mayor during discussions on the financial year 2025-26 budget.
The resolution was unanimously passed by all the members of the executive committee, marking a significant step toward the realisation of this project. The Municipal Corporation's general budget for the financial year 2025-26 was tabled before the executive committee, exceeding Rs 2,335 crore. Additionally, the revised budget for 2024-25, with an increase of approximately Rs 600 crore, was approved at the Prayagraj Smart City Limited auditorium.
The original annual budget of Rs 1,659.89 crore was revised to Rs 2,290.85 crore.
A resolution to install lights along the seven-kilometre-long Ganga Path, built along the banks of the river, was also approved by the Municipal Corporation executive committee. Moreover, streetlights and poles removed post-Maha Kumbh will be repurposed to light up extended areas of the city. The committee passed a resolution to request the fair administration to hand over these poles and fittings to the corporation for reuse.
To address urban congestion, the Municipal Corporation has approved the construction of multi-storey parking and commercial markets at three key locations, including Moti Park in Bahadurganj, Meena Bazaar, and Laxmi Chauraha in Chowk. These developments aim to improve parking facilities and boost local commerce. A recent survey of the city's extended areas revealed that the Municipal Corporation owns over 1,000 crore worth of land and properties at 70 locations.
To prevent encroachment, the corporation plans to safeguard these assets by planting trees and implementing other protective measures. Additionally, 10 ponds have been identified for beautification efforts. More sites are being explored, and once the selection process is complete, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared to enhance these water bodies and surrounding areas.
