Pune: The civic administration removed about 40 tonnes of dry, wet, and garden waste from Dhole Patil Road , Pune station, Bundgarden Road, Maldhakka Chowk, RTO, and Sangam Bridge as part of its "deep clean" drive on Monday. The drive is set to be extended to all areas in a phased manner in the next few weeks. Over 640 staffers, including road cleaning squads and workers attached to the solid waste management department, were involved in the cleaning drive.
"We have not confined the ‘deep clean' drive to clearing of waste from public areas. Five more departments were involved in Monday's drive. The electrical department cleared about 1,500 metres of unattended cables and also repaired the streetlight poles.
The road and drainage departments repaired footpaths and thoroughfares at various locations. Stormwater chambers were repaired at some locations while cleaning of drainage chambers was taken up at 19 locations. About 35 banners and boards, and over 120 posters were pulled down while the anti-encroachment department confiscated illegal handcarts and lifted unattended vehicles parked on roadside," a PMC official said.
An official from the solid waste management department said that strict instructions have been issued to the squads to strictly monitor all chronic spots in the area. "We have instructed imposition of fines against offenders, especially those involved in dumping garbage on roadside and along rivers," an official said. Civic activists and local citizens, however, said that PMC needs to take up such "deep clean" drives on a continuous basis and increase monitoring at locations where garbage is piling up.
