Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is prepared to lead and stand for the People’s Alliance party (PAP) in the 2026 General Election, provided the party agrees. “I will be available. It depends on the party, if the party wants me to stand, I will,” he said.

Mr Rabuka was part of PA during its inception in 2021 and played a crucial part in forming and projecting the profile of the party, right through to its narrow margin victory during the general election of December the following year. “If they don’t, I’ve had my run, I’ve had my fingerprints on the party, and they can decide whether they wipe the fingerprints out and continue with a new image, new profile, new leadership, new style,” he said. “I have done everything for the party for these past three years.

But I will not desert the party. “If they think someone else can do the job better, then I will step aside.” Mr Rabuka said considering their party voter pull, it would probably be difficult for someone to take over leadership in the next general election.

“They have their own numbers now, with that, the slip-offs from me and Lynda...

and if they are party votes, and they decide to put it with whoever puts their hand up, there can be hope. But it’s up to Fiji who will be voting.” Mr Rabuka holds the highest number of votes for PA in the 2022 General Election, with 77,748 votes.

Member of Parliament, Lynda Tabuya, ranked second with 11,965 votes. Third on the list is Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, with 5616 votes. This year is crucial for Mr Rabuka and the coalition.

There is a shift of public perception from eagerness to a sense of hopelessness in the Coalition. Feedback: ivamere.nataro@fijisun.
