PRIME Minister James Marape, with the support of its coalition partners, has wasted no time in addressing the government’s priorities after Parliament adjourned last week by placing law and order at the forefront of their agenda. Mr Marape made the announcement during a press conference held by the coalition following their meeting. The meeting focused on holding both the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso accountable for their past actions and future commitments.

Mr Marape said: “In this meeting, this body of leaders, on behalf of the Coalition Government, has elevated the fight on law and order as a number one priority as we move our country into 50 years of Independence and beyond. “We made a resolution that, in the face of many competing needs, this government must, at the very earliest, explore every possible means to uphold the rule of law in our country, strengthen law enforcement, and ensure that the police and all systems of justice are functioning properly. “While we work on the economy, fixing health and education, and developing infrastructure through Connect PNG, every concerted effort must be made in the area of law and order, including fighting corruption.

This is the number one focus for our coalition government.” He emphasised that this initiative builds upon the government’s ongoing efforts in the law and justice sector, including targeted personnel training to bolster both the police force and the broader justice system. Provincial Member for Northern, Gary Juffa, on behalf of the coalition, congratulated Mr Marape after defeating the vote of no confidence motion in his leadership and pledged the coalition’s commitment to meet regularly to ensure the government continues making the best decisions for the country.

Mr Marape also announced that the coalition has agreed to reconvene on October 7 to review the government’s progress in implementing its priorities and outline what remains to be done. He reassured the people of PNG that the Opposition had exercised their right to challenge the government through the vote of no confidence motion and urged that such actions should not be personalised. He also emphasised the importance of individual responsibility, urging citizens to adhere to the rule of law, and promoting respect within families.
